How to compress an image to an exact size

Use the Compress image tool. Many job, visa and exam portals set an exact upload size — 50 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB are common — and a photo straight from a phone is usually far larger.

Steps

  1. Choose your image file.
  2. Pick the target size the portal requires.
  3. Download the result and open it at full size to check it is still acceptable.
  4. If the portal also requires exact dimensions, use the Resize image tool as well — size and dimensions are different requirements.

When quality suffers

Compression trades quality for size. A detailed photo squeezed to 50 KB will look softer, and text in the image may blur. If the result is unreadable, the honest options are a slightly larger target (if the portal allows a range), a simpler image, or a different format — not a tool that promises the same quality at a tenth of the size, because no such tool exists.

Limits

The tool shrinks the file you give it; it cannot add detail, sharpen a blurred photo, or change the image's dimensions unless you resize it separately. Always check the compressed image yourself before uploading it to a portal.
