How to compress a PDF

Use the Compress PDF tool. Your file is processed in your browser and is never uploaded.

Steps

  1. Choose the PDF file you need to shrink.
  2. Run the compression and compare the before-and-after sizes shown on the page.
  3. Download the smaller file only if the saving is worth it — open it and check that the text and images still look right.

When this helps

Meeting a file-size limit on a job, visa, university, or exam portal, or making a PDF small enough to send by email without splitting it across messages.

Limits

Compression re-saves the file in an optimised form. It cannot shrink a PDF that is already mostly compressed images by much, and the page says so when the saving is tiny. It does not change the page order, remove pages, or repair a damaged PDF — for those jobs, use the Split PDF tool or the Delete PDF pages tool first, then compress the result.
